Agra: Vishnu Tiwari was 23 when a trial co- urt sentenced him to life imprisonment. He had been convicted of rape and didn't have the means to hire better lawyers. The only thing he could do was assert time and again that he had not committed the crime. After 20 years, in which time every member of his family di- ed, he has been declared innocent by Allaha- bad high court, reports Deepak Lavania. Senior superintendent of Agra Central Jail VK Singh said, “Vishnu will be released soon. We are waiting for the formal release or- der. It is unfortunate he had to be in jail fortwo decades for a crime he never committed.” It all started in the autumn of 2000. Vish- nu lived in UP's Lalitpur village with his fat- her and two brothers. In September, a wo- man from Silawan village, about 30km away, accused him of violating her. He was booked for rape, criminal intimidation and sexual exploitation of a woman under the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A trial court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
